🔹 Reasoning / Matching – Additional Formulas & Tricks
1. Coding-Decoding
- Letter to Number Conversion: A=1, B=2 … Z=26
- Forward Shift: Letter + n → New letter
- Example: PENCIL → QFODJM (+1 shift)
- Backward Shift: Letter – n → New letter
- Addition of Letter Positions: CODE → 3+15+4+5 = 27
- Reversal / Alternate coding:
- Example: First+last, Second+second last etc.
2. Blood Relation / Family Trees
- Son / Daughter / Father / Mother / Brother / Sister
- Quick notation:
- S = Son, D = Daughter, F = Father, M = Mother, H = Husband, W = Wife
- Relation formula trick:
- “X is brother of Y” → Gender check + common parent
- “X is mother of Y’s sister” → X = Mother, Y = sibling
3. Direction Sense
- Degree Rules for Clock / Turn:
- Right = clockwise
- Left = anti-clockwise
- 90° = quarter turn, 180° = opposite, 270° = three-quarter turn
- Distance + Direction:
- Final position = Initial + displacement vector
- Shortcut: Always draw simple diagram
4. Series / Pattern Recognition
- Arithmetic series: a_n = a_1 + (n-1)d
- Geometric series: a_n = a_1 * r^(n-1)
- Square / Cube series: n^2, n^3
- Factorial / Sum formulas:
- Sum of first n numbers: S = n(n+1)/2
- Sum of squares: S = n(n+1)(2n+1)/6
- Sum of cubes: S = [n(n+1)/2]^2
5. Odd One Out / Analogy
- Odd One Out:
- Check category: Alphabet / Number / Symbol / Shape / Function
- Analogy: A:B :: C:?
- Relation formula: Addition / Subtraction / Multiplication / Division / Position / Code
6. Arrangement / Ranking
- Row / Column / Circle:
- Clockwise / Anti-clockwise rules
- “Front / Back / Left / Right” → always mark position
- Height / Weight / Age ranking:
- Rank formula: Position from Left + Right = Total +1
- Shortcut: Always calculate using Total – Known positions
7. Mathematical Operations / Shortcut
- Digit Sum / Difference:
- Check sum of digits, modulo 9 for divisibility
- Cube / Square shortcut:
- Square of two-digit number ending 5 → n² = (n*(n+1)) *100 +25
- Example: 25² → 23100 + 25 = 625
8. Puzzles / Seating Arrangement
- Linear arrangement:
- Left-right notation
- Step 1: Draw diagram
- Circular arrangement:
- Clockwise / Anti-clockwise
- Fix one person as reference point
9. Alphabet / Number Mixed Coding
- Alternate Coding:
- Example: Alternate letters reverse, numbers +2/-1
- First+Last letter sum / difference
- Position shift formula:
- Position in alphabet + operation = coded letter
🔹 Quick Tricks Summary
- Series: Arithmetic / Geometric / Factorial / Square / Cube
- Alphabet: +n, -n, reverse, alternate coding
- Clock / Direction: Always draw, Right/Left rules
- Ranking / Arrangement: Total – known = unknown
- Coding / Decoding: Letter→Number, Position sum/difference
- Odd one out / Analogy: Category / Relation / Function

🔹 UPSC/SSC Reasoning / Matching – Ultimate Cheat Sheet
1. Number Series / Mathematical Series
| Type | Formula / Shortcut | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Arithmetic | 2, 5, 8, 11 → d=3 | |
| Geometric | 3, 6, 12, 24 → r=2 | |
| Square | n² | 1, 4, 9, 16 |
| Cube | n³ | 1, 8, 27, 64 |
| Factorial | n! = 12…*n | 1, 2, 6, 24 |
| Sum formulas | Σn = n(n+1)/2, Σn² = n(n+1)(2n+1)/6 | 5 first numbers: 1+2+3+4+5=15 |
2. Alphabet Series / Coding-Decoding
| Pattern | Shortcut | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Forward Shift | Letter + n | PENCIL → QFODJM (+1) |
| Backward Shift | Letter – n | PENCIL → ODBMHK (-1) |
| Reverse / Alternate | Z→A or alternate letters | Z, X, U, Q |
| Letter → Number | A=1…Z=26 | CODE → 3+15+4+5=27 |
| First+Last letter sum | Add positions | BAT → B+T = 2+20 = 22 |
3. Direction / Clock
| Type | Formula / Shortcut | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Hour hand angle | θ = 30H + M/2 | 3:00 → 90° |
| Minute hand angle | θ = 6M | 15 min → 90° |
| Turns | 90° = Right, 180° = Opposite, 270° = Left | Facing North → 90° Right → East |
